Life Done Differently - Lisa Jansen
I came across Lisa's book shortly after purchasing Vandalf but before we hit the road. It's the first book I had started and finished in an embarrassingly long time. I started and finished it within a few days at the hotel and it made me so excited to start my adventure.
It was almost like reading a journal or a wish list, Lisa’s approach to life made me feel like I’m not alone, and I’m doing the right thing.
Go check out her blog and read her book!

A Thousand Wasted Sundays
I bought this book after seeing the Sober Awkward live in Auckland - which is a brilliant podcast for anyone in the sober category! I read this book in within 2 nights. Such an inspiring story from Vic, who shares every brutal truth of her journey. Despite not being a mother, I really felt a connection to her relationship with alcohol and the ‘party girl’ life. I finished the book smiling with happy tears in my eyes feeling so proud of the person I just read about. She’s an incredible person (who signed my book!) and I would recommend this book highly to anyone thinking of going or is sober!
Check out the blog, podcast, book and community Vic has built!

Wild - Cheryl Strayed
I will admit, I heard about the book through Gilmore Girls. I will also admit it took me 8 years to read it after that and I actually saw the film first only a few months back.
I love my walking, and am hoping I will become a decent hiker soon. Chery’s story has given me some pointers on what to do and definitely not what to do when out in the wild with a giant rucksack.
I hope to never feel the loss and darkness Cheryl has gone through, it’s a heartbreaking story written beautifully and intelligently. Her story managed to break and heal as I read every page and inspired me in so many ways.
Read about Cheryl’s story and books - before you watch the film (it was hard to not read the book in Reese Witherspoon’s voice).

Wanderers, A History of Women Walking - Kerri Andrews
If you love your walking and even reading about walking this book is brilliant.
I had a few dull days of feeling a bit uninspired to get outside (despite living on the road). This book helped me put my boots on and tie up my laces to explore new places.
It’s also connected to inspired writers who walked like Cheryl Strayed, Virginia Wolf and Dorothy Wordsworth.
I got to finish this book at the top of a mountain which is a sentence I never thought I’d write.

They Think It's All Sober
Meet Jamie & Tom, two lads from the music industry who came together to make a podcast talking about their relationship with alcohol in an open and honest platform. They bring on incredible guests from rockstars, social influencers, athletes, DJs, TV stars and the brilliant psychotherapist David Gibbs.
This was the first sober podcast I found on day 2 and I’ve watched (or listened to) them grow in followers and their online support for the sober community.
They did a liv sow recently and will hopefully do more!

Sober Awkward
This podcast started in 2021 with two British women, Vic & Lucy, living in Australia who talk about every awkward, uncomfortable and brutal part of going sober with advice, truth and the verified benefits it brings. After Lucy left the pod Vic brought on her mate Hamish who shared his brand-new perspective to sober life.
They are hilarious and so honest about their relationship and experiences with alcohol. I’ve mentioned Vic in my book bit above as I got to see them live recently in Aukland which was fantastic. If you like sober podcasts I highly recommend seeing one live if they do a show!
They have 100s of episodes on Spotify and have some brilliant guests – including Fat Boy Slim!

Friends, Lovers & The Big Terrible Thing
I started listening to Matthew Perry’s book before he tragically passed away and was even listening to him at time I found out. Was pretty spooky and so sad.
I encourage everyone to listen to his book (or read it!) Hearing him talk about his life makes you feel like he’s telling you as his friend. (that’s not me trying to make a cheesy friends show reference).
